StarTalk Summer Courses

Brigham Young University's National Middle East Language Resource Center has been funded to offer a 2012 Summer Arabic camp. Please watch this web site for updates and possible changes (unlikely, but always a possibility).

This year we will offer only one residential camp session which will run from Monday, July 9 to Saturday, July 28. Students will be housed in the Foreign Language Student Housing Complex. The following options will be offered: 1) a fast-track option for those who have learned the Arabic script (but know little more) to complete the equivalent of BYU's Arabic 101 course and receive four university credit hours; 2) a parallel but more moderately-paced track will allow another group of approximately twelve students to complete the equivalent of a rigorous year of high school Arabic and receive the corresponding credit (no prior exposure to Arabic necessary); 3) a course for those who have completed the equivalent of Arabic 101 and want to press on and do Arabic 102 (four university credit hours).arabic-without-walls

All students will come away with a solid repertoire of pragmatic speaking and reading skills and a first-class introduction to Arab culture, popular and high. Students who are accepted are strongly encouraged to continue their study via Arabic without Walls, our distance-learning course. The fast-track StarTalk program is especially designed for those who are serious about acquiring high-level proficiency in Arabic language and culture.

family-studentThe cost of the program will be $900 plus books, if students do not already have them (approx. cost: $100). Some financial aid is available to students for whom this would constitute a hardship (to download the financial aid application form, see the link at the bottom of the page). Eligible students include those who will have completed at least the eighth grade on up through those who will graduate this year. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis and notifications sent out by email. All students should possess the maturity, work habits, and sense of responsibility that will enable them to make the most of this valuable opportunity.
